East Coast Main Line

  • 21/07/1845 Newcastle & Berwick Railway Act receives Royal Assent.
  • 1845 N&BR merges with the Newcastle & North Shields Railway allowing use of N&NSR's Carliol Square Terminus by N&BR trains.
  • 14/06/1846 North British Railway's line from Edinburgh to Berwick opens.
  • 01/03/1847 Heaton to Morpeth section opens.
  • 29/03/1847 Tweedmouth to Chathill section opens.
  • 01/07/1847 Chathill to Morpeth opens.
  • 09/08/1847 N&BR amalgamates with the York & Newcastle Railway to form the York Newcastle & Berwick Railway.
  • 28/08/1848 Temporary bridge across the River Tyne allows through traffic to the south.
  • 15/08/1849 High Level Bridge opens replacing the temporary bridge over the Tyne.
  • 20/07/1850 Royal Border Bridge opens allowing through trains to the north and completing the link between Edinburgh and London.
  • 30/08/1850 East end of Newcastle Central Station opens to YN&BR trains. Although all ECML services have to reverse at Newcastle Central.
  • 1906 With the opening of the King Edward Bridge through running of ECML trains at Newcastle Central is at last possible.
  • 1991 Line electrified
